Data-speed record

The demand for mobile data exchange is growing rapidly. Thanks to highly sophisticated mobile handsets such as phones, PDAs and laptops, both private and business people seek on-the-go access to data files of all shapes and sizes. Siemens engineers are continuously working to facilitate even faster wireless data transfer. And they now have landed a breakthrough result.

For the first time ever, mobile data exchange at a rate of one gigabit per second was successfully carried out in one of our research laboratories. That equals to 1,000 megabits per second. To put this number into perspective: modern WLAN networks, which offer the fastest wireless data transfer rate today, operate at a speed of up to 50 megabits per second. This immense success was made possible with three transmitting and four receiving antennas simultaneously – all using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM ) technology. A new generation of mobile communication tools (which is expected to arrive around 2015) will rely on higher transmission rates in order to facilitate a much higher quality of voice, data, image and multimedia data.

The experimental one-gigabit transmission system will be showcased at the 3GSM World Congress 2005 in Cannes. And rest assured: Siemens engineers are already working on making data exchange even faster and enhancing the mobility of devices equipped with multiple antennas.
