BenQ(Acer) S700 is announced in 2004

Design

BenQ(Acer) S700 handset is a distinctive-looking clamshell. Measures 82 x 41 x 21 mm in size and weighing 90 grams, it is light and feels very slender despite its size.A secound 80 x 48 pixel, 2 display dominates the front cover, and although not the clearest external display we've seen it is still quite functional. The 256-color display unfortunately suffers from a very grainy appearance. The grainyness is not a problem when displaying text, however, just images - and due to the S700 first and foremost being a color phone, this is less of a problem than it could have been. The display resolution 128 x 160 pixel ideal for small and smart phone.

The left side of the unit holds a spacious volume rocker, while on the other side we find a dedicated camera button. There is nice LEDs which notify users of new messages, active network and missed calls. This is not common for all BenQ(Acer) handsets and is not necessary to pick up and activate the device to see whether any alerts are waiting.

Ergonomics

The S700 lies well in ones hand.Sporting a simple and user friendly menu in style with other recent BenQ(Acer) handsets. The plastic keypad has very limited key travel and jiggles independently of the phone, giving it a cheap feel while oddly designed buttons, with the shrunken center keys for no apparent reason, make the phone harder to dial than necessary. And last, but not least, a four-way navigation buttons centered below the display.

Features

In the WAN department, the S700 boasts healthy support for Tri-band 900/1800/1900 MHz, as well as GPRS, SMS, and a range of applications such as WAP , Email client, Java MIDP 2.0, a voice recorder, FAX/Modem, Loud Speaker, all of which laptop and handheld users will be pleased to learn is a breeze to utilize either by means of infrared old wireless device,GPRS support is the fastest way to download files with your mobile, and spacious phone book.

As previously mentioned, the S700 is also equipped with a 0.3 megapixel camera support for picture-taking and audio/video recording, as well as an integrated MP3 player. The latter of which is also the reason for why the 0 MB of internal memory, which initially appears spacious, is quickly stretched to its limits. The S700 also comes with an Mini Secure Digital (miniSD) and expansion slot located under its battery,a 16-128 MB card comes bundled in the sales package, more space for images audio and video files, less time for PC and communication cable for updating internal memory, MP3 and MPEG4 are both formats which can be stored for playback on the BenQ(Acer) S700.

Performance

Audio quality on the S700 was crystal clear, and signal quality was good. The removable 700 mAh Li-ion battery is rated for 3 hours talk time or 100 hours standby, which is quite low given the battery's theoretical capacity. Charge time is about 105 minutes.

Availability

The BenQ(Acer) S700 is now available throughout Europe in some language version.

Conclusion

BenQ(Acer)'s S700 is yet another model in a range of phones from experienced users from BenQ(Acer). A new compact design and a reduced sized battery - which avoids rendering a negative impact on battery life - ensures a thin and light phone which is ergonomically comfortable.
