Sony MZ5 is announced in 2001

Design

The latter quickly became immensely popular and also the manufacturer's flagship, but with the advent of the MZ5, Sony has finally entrenched itself as an important player in the market for experienced users, the Sony MZ5 is slender and not very compact handset at 88 x 49 x 32 mm and 100 grams. The black and white display is ideal for text, messages and simple pictures like logos and picture massages. The display resolution 96 x 72 pixel is not very high but is normal for small phone like this.

The left side of the unit holds a spacious volume rocker.
Lacking LEDs of any kind, however, the display - combined with vibration and audible alerts - is the MZ5's only way of notifying users of new messages and missed calls. This is common for all Sony handsets, requiring users to inconveniently have to pick up and activate the device to see whether any alerts are waiting rather than just glance at it.

Ergonomics

The MZ5 is comfortable to hold and lies well in ones hand.A numerical keypad placed below offers appropriately-spaced keys and are pleasantly comfortable in use.Sporting a simple and user friendly menu in style with other recent Sony handsets. The plastic keypad has good placed keys, with the comfortable center keys, make the phone easer to dial. Its keypad is as pleasing in use as its chassis is on the eyes: tactile feedback is excellent and all buttons are placed in a logical manner - quite a feat, considering MZ5's knack for quirky keypads. And last, but not least, a five-way joystick centered below the display.

Features

Dual band 900/1800 MHz connectivity isn't all the Sony MZ5 has to offer: there's also support for SMS, and a range of applications such as WAP , Email client, a voice recorder, FAX/Modem, all of which laptop and handheld users will be pleased to learn is a breeze to utilize either by means of and spacious phone book.

As previously mentioned, the MZ5 is also equipped with , as well as an integrated MP3 player. The latter of which is also the reason for why the 64 MB of internal memory, which initially appears spacious, is quickly stretched to its limits.

Unfortunately, neither Memory Stick Duo format or any other method of memory expansion is supported by the MZ5, meaning users find themselves drawn by the MP3 playback capabilities will also quickly - and repeatedly - drawn to their PC and USB cable for updating ones playlist.

Performance

Audio quality on the MZ5 was crystal clear, and signal quality was good. The removable 620 mAh Li-ion battery is rated for 3.4 hours talk time or 150 hours standby, which is quite low given the battery's theoretical capacity. Charge time is about 93 minutes.

Availability

The Sony MZ5 is now available throughout Europe in some language version.

Conclusion

Sony MZ5 is a beautiful phone to hold and use, and it's quickly won our hearts. The typical Sony design flair is present in abundance, with all the requisite consumer features to back it up.But love doesn't notice such little flaws.
